Because pearls are soft, they require special care. Here's a list of tips:
A pearl strand should be worn at least twice a month so it hangs properly. Contact with skin also helps to keep the pearls moisturized.
Pearls should be the last thing put on and the first thing taken off so they have as little contact as possible with makeup, hair spray and perfume.
Don't swim with pearls - chlorine or saltwater can ruin them.
After each wearring, wipe pearls with a soft cloth. Jewelry cleaners and detergents are too harsh.
The Cultured Pearl Information Center suggests restringing pearls every two to three years.
Store pearls in a silk bag or velvet-lined box away from other valuables to avoid surface damage.
